Father, today's reading below is a strong reminder that we are all messengers in some way, shape, form or action. No matter what we do or say, we are sending a message. Whether that message is Good, bad or indifferent is up to us. The great thing about John the Baptist is he was crystal clear about his message and what he was doing. When I think about Mahalia Jackson in today's quote, she was crystal clear that her singing was about You and not about her and how well she could sing. She did not praise herself, she praised You. She was delivering a message and her voice (singing) was the medium. It has been said that "the medium is the message" but if that were the case, then Mahalia's singing would be about her instead of about You, but when I look at her even more closely I see that her voice was the medium and it was a gift from You, which still makes the medium about You, not her. Her voice reflect Your Voice. Oh my dear God, when it is the Truth, it does show up everywhere. It has also been said that the 'medium is not the message, the message is the message.' Mahalia was as clear as John the Baptist was in being a messenger and she delivered that message powerfully and perfectly, just as John did. Loud and proud! Oh how I Love You Father. It always comes back to You, as it should. Thank You so much for the messengers in my Life and for making me one of Your messengers as well. And thank You for reminding me that no matter what I do or say, my actions and reactions are indeed sending a message and I need to be more mindful of the message I am sending.
Through Jesus Christ's Precious Blood, Most Sacred Name and Most Holy Face. ~Amen
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Luke 3:1-6
1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiber'i-us Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Iturae'a and Trachoni'tis, and Lysa'ni-as tetrarch of Abile'ne,
2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Ca'iaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechari'ah in the wilderness;
3 and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God."
