Stevia is part of the sunflower family and is also known as sweetleaf, sweet leaf, sugarleaf. Stevia is a tender perennial native to parts of Brazil and Paraguay favoring humid, wet environments, although the root does not tolerate standing water. Commonly found in alternative sweeteners and marketed under different trade names. Contains active compounds steviol glycosides which has about 250 to 300 times the sweetness of sugar.
Less calories than refined sugar. May also help lower blood pressure and has been shown in studies to lower blood sugar and insulin levels after a meal.
No side effects. If you are diabetic keep a close watch on blood sugar levels
