PYGEUM (Pygeum Africanum)

DESCRIPTION: Pygeum is second only to saw palmetto in number of studies for prostate function. It is known for its exceptional content of a particular fatty acid, called beta-sitosterol. Beta sitosterol has a high affinity for the prostate and may be particularly useful in maintaining normal lipid and fluid balance. This herbal remedy is made from the bark of the Prunus africana plant to relieve discomfort associated with inflammation with regards to an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Pygeum (P. africanum bark extract) has been observed to moderately improve urinary symptoms associated with enlargement of the prostate gland or prostate inflammation. Numerous human studies report that pygeum significantly reduces urinary hesitancy, urinary frequency, the number of times patients need to wake up at night to urinate, and pain with urination in men who experience mild-to-moderate symptoms.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: Helps maintain normal lipid and fluid balance in the prostate. Assists men that have an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer by reducing urinary hesitancy, urinary frequency, and reduce the number of times patients wake up at night to urinate along with reducing the pain with urination. It is also used for inflammation, kidney disease, urinary problems, malaria, stomachache, fever, and to increase sexual desire.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS: Generally safe may cause nausea and abdominal pain
