Periwinkle is a flowering evergreen ornamental plant. Because the plants are low and spread quickly, they are often used as groundcover in garden landscapes and container gardens. Known to be an invasive plant species.
Components of periwinkle are used in many cancer drugs that treat lymphoma, leukemia and childhood cancers. May be used an antibacterial, antispasmodic, carminative, coagulant, depurative, diuretic, emetic and a sedative. In the area of enhancing memory and improving focus in aging minds periwinkle contains vincamine, a precursor to the chemical vinpocetine which enhances natural memory.
Relatively safe in moderation. Extracts are not for long term use.
