Elderberry has long been considered one of the most versatile herbs. Elderberry contains Vitamins A, C and bioflavinoids. It also contains properties that act as sedatives to relieve pain. Elderberry's action works as an expectorant and has anti-catarrhal and anti-inflammatory properties. It contains high amounts of proanthocyanidins as well as some polysaccharides.
Elderberry works to detoxify the blood cells of waste and increases the circulation of blood. It has promotes sweating and has the ability to bring down a fever. When Elderberry is mixed with Peppermint it helps to combat the common cold, flu and fevers. When used for infections it is best to combine Elderberry with Goldenseal and Yarrow. If using Elderberry for congestion in the lungs or asthma, it works best when combined with Mullein. If it is used as an eyewash, it is best combined with Eyebright and Goldenseal.
The seeds of Elderberry can be toxic and should be avoided. Consult with your physician first.
