MARS SQUARE SATURN
This aspect is a seat of inner tensions. The tension of the square gives us motivation. Squares are dynamic aspects that give us the drive to succeed. What begins as an inner problem is overcome or accepted, and then becomes a door to understanding.
Mars is busy, hyper and action-oriented. Mars is assertive, aggressive and competitive, while Saturn rules stability and responsibility. It is also disciplined and cautious. Saturn rules the father, limitations and authority figures.
This aspect is the classic contradiction of wanting to push forward (Mars) yet feeling held back (Saturn). That is because Mars is impulsive and aggressive, while Saturn is self-limiting and restrictive. It will take some work to control this energy in order to get it to a workable level of success. You may feel action-oriented to do something and then suddenly talk yourself out of it because of this or that.
This aspect is really tricky because it will answer your question with a question. Mars wants to move forward since Mars wants to get there immediately, if not sooner, either by car or by conversation, it just wants to get to the place that it wants to be NOW. It's like sitting at a stop light grinding your gears trying to move forward, but the car won't move because the emergency brake is on.
Saturn limits, holds back, and restricts. So you see, this energy can't seem to get it going. It's sort of a holding pattern. In a conversation, the question doesn't get answered because the question is answered with a question. It's maddening! Someone might turn the tables where you could end up answering questions, when you were the one asking the original question. Watch this in press conferences.
The question and answer could look like this . . . You: "Do you want to go to the store with me?" The other person responds: "Why? Do you think I don't want to go to the store with you?"
You are left standing there wondering what the hell just happened. How did that even halfway translate into not wanting to go to the store? What kind of answer was that? Where did that come from?
This can also be the question that negates itself . . . "Do you want to go to the store with me, or not?" . . . "Do you want to go to the concert, or not?" . . . "Do you want salt and pepper, or not?" You can always hear the lack of confidence from the "or not" individual. There is an internal and insecure dispute occurring with an anticipation of being turned down or turned away. The individual is expecting rejection for some reason.
This aspect restricts forward motion at every turn, as Saturn takes off his belt and wraps it around Mars. Saturn gives Mars the squeeze and thereby limits his ability to move forward. Mars is all about movement and speed. This aspect carries negative thinking because Saturn is restrictive and limited, so when coupled-up with Mars, solutions are limited and questioned at every turn.
Saturn is 'the most' pessimistic planet, while Jupiter is the most optimistic. It's a real dichotomy of sorts. In Saturn's defense, you have to have a negative, which is not necessarily bad, but the opposite thinking in order to have practical, sensible and reasonable thought occur. That's why Saturn is the way he is. Saturn doesn't doubt and confront what is said just to be difficult, he's just not buying everything that is sold. What's wrong with that?
All the same, it's tough to communicate with someone who asks questions in their answer. Do not take this personal if you find yourself communicating with a Mars square Saturn individual because they are the one who is trying to find certainty within themselves, not necessarily certainty within you. There is a big difference. Do they or do they 'not' want to go the store? This aspect is, but isn't funny, which is also a contradiction. This aspect will challenge your intuition and cause you to doubt yourself.
You get to decide how far you want to play the question and answer game. I guarantee this is going to make some conversations even more difficult with those who you have a difficult time conversing with anyway. And those who are easily offended, defensive, or still healing, this is going to be even a BIGGER problem.
At the same time, your level of communication will grow Light years during this 'orb of influence' if you will look at the question behind the question as being a method of reasoning.
Imagine that, 'choosing to change' your frustration in the communication toward reasoning, then the confrontation or challenge falls away with its own weight.
The individual who lacks in confidence will have 'reasoning' volley back to them and neither party will need to be offended or put-off by extra questions.
If the contradiction (question within a question shows up) then just dive into it being a game of reasoning - 'The Socratic Method' aka 'The Maieutic Method' [pronounced may-u-tic] developed by Socrates where you use reasoning (questioning) to realize that the answer was present all along. This is where you keep asking questions, reviewing and clarifying, which helps you solidify the answer you already knew. Charlie Kirk was well-known for using 'The Socratic Method' even though he didn't have Mars square Saturn. There are rules in 'The Socratic Method' and one of them is you have to 'postpone judgment'. Rat-Damn-it! Ol' judgment has to wait in the wings.
