Bilberry contains compounds known as anthocyanosides, which are very potent antioxidants. It is also rich in bioflavonoids, manganese, phosphorus, iron and zinc. It contains many important phytochemicals including arbutin, which may benefit the urinary system. There is some research that indicates it can regenerate visual purple, which is necessary for healthy night vision because it strengthens the capillaries. The capillaries are small veins that surround the eyes, therefore the circulation around the eyes is improved. The anthocyanosides may also strengthen the capillaries in the retina, which may help slow macular degeneration.
